Review of Nature Valley® Soft-Baked Oatmeal Squares

Upon a gloriously sunny morning, I received Nature Valley® Soft-Baked Oatmeal Squares in my

mailbox.Yum! I devoured one immediately as you can see in the photo. What? Reviewing is hard work. ;)

This was one product that I was excited to test for a review. I've always been a fan of Nature Valley's products. My favorites are the line of crunchy bars.

Apple Crisp

and the

Oats 'n Honey

especially. Although the Chewy Trail Mix

Fruit & Nut

is also fabulous. Oh! The

Strawberry Yogurt

one too! Sweet and tangy layer of yogurt...yummy....Of course, I digress.

When reflecting upon the healthy snacks that Nature Valley has provided health-conscious, outdoorsy consumers like me, then of course excitement is expected. To have a quick, portable oatmeal bar for a simple breakfast on the run or even a snack is great. I'd previously been a fan of

Quaker's Soft Baked Bars

. They're fabulous for a fast oatmeal fix - especially warmed, but they're quite sugary and could be larger.

Enter, Nature Valley's Soft-Baked Oatmeal Squares.

Taste & Nutrition

As soon as I received my box, I tore open a package like a starving addict. Upon first impression, the packaging was colorful and informative. The bar appeared smooth and slightly textured. There was thankfully not a large amount of hardened sugar for the topping as with some snack bars of similar variety, but there was just enough drizzled to be satisfying. In outward appearances, these oatmeal squares (both flavors) appear to be much healthier and natural than other brands I've tried. The size is satisfying for a quick snack, but I'm unsure that they would fulfill all appetites for a breakfast option. The Peanut Butter's flavor was overpowering and much preferred as a snack rather than breakfast. The Brown Sugar Cinnamon could've used additional flavor, but paired well with breakfast while not being too over powering for a snack.

I found both flavors to be dry and crumbly, so not a good idea for commuters unless care is taken to use the wrapper. When you consider the bar is healthier than most, it's easy to overlook neatness. I also felt that both oatmeal squares were a little salty. It was as if there were occasional grains salt that hadn't dissolved still intertwined in the bars. It wasn't enough of an issue to affect my consumption. Despite these issues, the taste was still worthy of consideration. Besides, they were still good enough I didn't leave the crumbs!

Final Verdict

I find that these oatmeal squares are dry. My Husband felt they had a slight after-taste, but would eat them again if given. My children ate them too fast to provide any real answers for the review. So, overall I would buy them if I needed a fast snack or breakfast, but feel that they would be better less salty/grainy and more moist. If you want a healthier snack than a fast food breakfast, then totally give them a try. They'd go paired with coffee! The best part, I suffered no ill-effects from eating them. Normally I get a stomach-ache from products with chicory root fiber. These were not a problem. Of course, I'll forever be loyal to the flavors I previously loved as mentioned in the beginning of the review.
