Special K™ Coffee House Breakfast Shakes Review

I received two full-sized Special K™ Coffee House Breakfast Shakes to try and review compliments of BzzAgent. As a busy, multi-tasking mother, photographer, blogger and dreamer I was happy to try a product that would not only help me save time, but provide energy nutrition as a portable breakfast.

I frequently go straight to my computer after sending my kids off the school. When I am busy editing photos from a recent session or blogging, I sometimes forget to grab breakfast. We all know that's a bad idea and definitely doesn't help with productivity. So one morning when my stomach was desperately growling in hunger and I was extremely busy, I forced myself to run to my fridge and get out the Chocolate Mocha flavor of Special K Coffee House Breakfast Shakes. I looked over the ingredients and was pleased with the percentages of added nutrients, but concerned about the 18g of sugar, 210mg of sodium and some of the additives such as carrageenan. Yet, coffee extract and caffeine were in the bottle too and I do love the taste of chocolate mocha, so for the sake of an honest review, I opened the bottle and took a drink.

Thick, sandy texture and kinda bland were my first thoughts. I could taste chocolate and mocha, but the flavor was definitely not what I'm used to when I buy chocolate mocha flavored drinks such as Starbuck's Mocha coffee drink in the bottle at most gas stations and grocery retailers. Of course, while Starbuck's Mocha may taste significantly better and feel smooth during its descent, it's also got a higher sugar content at 31g, but lower sodium and not nearly the amount of percentage of added nutrients. Yet, as much as I truly wanted to like the Special K Coffee House Breakfast Shake in Chocolate Mocha, I'd much rather have the Starbucks drink for a chocolate mocha coffee drink fix despite it not really being a healthy breakfast choice. So my taste review is definitely disappointing, but did the drink perform? Yes! I was actually satisfied and it lasted almost until lunch before hunger finally returned.

Next, I waited a week to ensure I had Chocolate Mocha out of my system in case I'd had a reaction. I always get sluggish and have issues with my stomach from products with carrageenan and so definitely needed time to allow my stomach to rest. So finally the day came to try the Vanilla Cappuccino. I wasn't looking forward to it to be honest. I'd not felt too good from the carrageenan the week before. I became nauseous at the thought and it didn't help that I'm not really a fan of vanilla flavored products because I would much rather have chocolate! Yet, one hungry and busy morning I took a chance and gave the Vanilla Cappuccino flavor an honest try.

My first impression was similar to the Chocolate Mocha, but actually not as intensely negative. This one was less grainy and easier to drink. The taste was similar to something with that 'fake' vanilla flavor, but was definitely more tolerable. The remainder of the results were the same as with the Chocolate Mocha, including the nutrition facts except for sodium which was 230mg.

So in the end, I can recommend these drinks only for those mornings where you're in a rush to go and need something with the appropriate percentage of added nutrients. Both drinks are a tad high in sugar and sodium, but are able to control hunger and provide energy via coffee extract which provides caffeine.  If you're not picky about texture or additives such as carrageenan, than try them!
