e.l.f. Hydrating Bubble Mask ($14) | Buy
This hydrating and nourishing gel transforms into a bubble mask on the face. Watch as bubbles fizz and foam to remove excess dirt and cleanse pores for glowing, healthy looking skin. Apply a thin layer to slightly damp skin, wash with warm water after 5-10mins. Follow with a moisturizer. Recommended usage is 1-3 times a week. Avoid eye contact.
Just by name, this product should be moisturizing and bubbly. My initial assumption was that it would be great for dry skin and somehow fizzy like soda. Was it really? The box and container were clean and bright. The container itself was interesting due to where you push the top to dispense. I noticed immediately that the product begins to bubble upon air contact, but even more so once applied to wet skin. Application is a bit tricky the first time due to the gel like consistency, but more so due to the bubbles. If you don't fully apply before bubbling begins, it's like spreading shaving cream. However, it's otherwise easy to apply this 'mask' on wet or dry skin, in or out of the shower and it does clean effectively. I found my skin to be soft and clean of dirt and makeup, but a bit tight. Without applying moisturizer, my face did soften more with time, though my t-zone type skin seemed to be a bit oily. The typically dry areas of my skin were far less dry, so I can handle oily provided I don't see an increase in acne with prolonged usage. The bubbles didn't hurt or burn and no, they didn't feel like I was wearing soda. The feeling was pleasing and helped to indicate removal time once the bubbling stopped. It also didn't drip while wearing so I was able to do something else while it worked. I do have sensitive skin so thankfully had no reaction using, but the fact that it is scented does deter me from purchasing more. I'd prefer to not have to smell a scented product the entire time it's on my face doing it's work. Lastly, whatever you do DO NOT accidentally get this in your mouth. It works well for removing dirt and makeup, looks cool, but it really tastes horrid. Of course, ingestion is never recommended for most beauty products so be safe.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Mineral Infused Primer ($6) | Buy
This clear multipurpose skin primer helps prepare your skin so makeup goes on evenly for a long lasting finish. Designed to help combat excess oil, flaky dryness, enlarged pores and fine lines. Pump out a small amount and blend evenly with your fingers over the face and neck
Liquid silk in a bottle. That's the straight to the point review for e.l.f.'s Mineral Infused Face Primer in Clear. I have combination skin, prone to acne in oily areas of my t-zone. I have to be cautious what products I use. My initial concern was whether or not such a low cost product could provide the longer lasting and smooth application benefits of primer without causing acne or irritation. To my surprise, I found this to not only feel amazing in application, it worked amazingly well too! I noticed fewer issues with dry skin fighting with my foundation, my skin was baby posterior soft and my usual daily makeup lasted longer than it does typically. I'm not thrilled with the cheated feeling of the bottle being larger than the interior holding the primer, but considering how well this primer worked and that it is affordable, I can overlook this annoyance.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Baked Highlighter & Bronzer ($4) | Buy
Create a gorgeous sculpted glow with this baked duo. The Highlighter helps illuminate the skin with a sheer wash of shimmer, while the Bronzer adds a natural-looking contour effect. Enriched with Jojoba, Sunflower, Apricot, and Grape to help nourish and hydrate the skin. Apply the bronzer on the sides of the forehead, under the cheekbones and chin to sculpt and define. Sweep the highlighter onto cheekbones, brow bones, and/or décolleté to add shimmer.
This product is quite potently reminiscent of a currently popular song. The strangest thing happens every time I open the lid to apply. The song begins playing loudly in my head and only is silenced upon closing the lid again. "I hate you, I love you...." There are no words more elegant to describe the e.l.f Baked Highlighter and Bronzer. While the packaging is simplistic and easily portable, the product is literally the ying yang of quality. The highlighter is awesome. The subtle shimmer makes me feel far more girly than my inner tomboy wants to ever admit. It is just enough shimmer to highlight chosen areas without being so sparkly to make me look like a vamp off Twilight or a child princess performing in a school play. The bronzer is far less amazing. Despite my pale skin in contrast to the darkness of the bronzer, it appears invisible except when used to contour the hollow above my eyes. I was annoyed by the lack of visibility. As for being together, these are seriously star-crossed lovers. They're too close together and are both quite dry to where once used, eventually nothing comes off onto the brush or applicator unless I scrape a bit off the top with a clean, sharp object. I'd buy this if it was just the highlighter, but not combined.
e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator ($3) | Buy
Gently exfoliate lips to remove dry, chapped skin. Gives a sweet and smoothing sensation. Enriched with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Avocado, Grape, and Jojoba Oils to help nourish and protect. Apply to clean, damp lips. Gently rub the tube over your lips in small, circular motions. Gently wipe off with a cotton pad.
I adore mint. So much so that I've began hand-crafting a variety of natural beauty products due to my mint-obsession. Thankfully, beauty products are starting to utilize mint, allowing me to enjoy my favorite scent without all the work. So, of all the products in the e.l.f VoxBox, I was most excited to try the e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator. This product has the slight scent and pale color of mint surrounded by a matte black tube the size of classic lipstick. It appeared smooth and well defined, without any appearance of fingerprints or human handling. Application was interesting. I've never applied lipstick with a texture! It felt as though I was applying a sugary chapstick. That sounds unpleasant, but actually it was oddly relaxing and perfectly suited for a daily or weekly home spa beauty ritual to add to my regimen. I found that the ingredients do work quite well as my lips were smoother, softer and the edges far less dry for detailed lipstick application. There was zero oily residue despite the oils (Vitamin E, Shea, Avocado, Grape, Jojoba) in the ingredients. The fact that this exfoliator was contained within a lipstick tube prevented issues with mess and allowed for ease of application. It is just firm enough to apply without breaking while smoothly applying without using too much at one time. The taste however was a bit less pleasant. It's not designed for ingestion anyway, but being a lip product, it happens. However, totally worth any momentary oral confusion upon forgetting to not lick your lips during application. I'll be adding this to my favorites just because it works at it's only $3, so I can use all I want without feeling guilty. It's also great for use on other skin areas though this isn't exactly the recommended usage. Funniest thing though, I found a typo on the rear of the box! :)
e.l.f. Matte Lip Color ($3) | Buy
This convenient jumbo-sized lip pencil creates exact color application with twist-up ease. The pigment rich color glides on effortlessly to provide long lasting matte color. Enriched with Vitamin A, C & E to help moisturize and hydrate lips. Apply to lips and blend in color. Use alone or layer with your favorite lip gloss.
Matte lip color has been trending lately, so I was excited to receive e.l.f.'s lip color in Wine. However, this product wasn't nearly as impressive as my hopes had been. For one, the lipcolor was not matte on my lips. It was more like the effect from using lip stain and even a bit reminiscent of the play lipstick in childhood makeup toy gift sets. The twist applicator worked well, but the lipstick was loose and I felt it could've been a bit longer considering the length of the applicator. However, they thoughtfully provided a build in sharpener that makes you feel intelligent when you discover it and this color did look nice for a quick fix option. Just don't expect longevity or premium color and you'll be satisfied with the minimal look. I personally wouldn't buy this as I frequently lick my lips (nervous habit) and so prefer a lipstick with better longevity and durability.
Overall, e.l.f. is great for playing beautifully regardless of budget. Packaging is simplistic and sometimes the amount provided doesn't match the size, but the investment is so low it's not a big deal. Quality is hit or miss. Some products are as cheap as their price. Others are surprisingly good in value. In the end, e.l.f. is great for teens or those starting the beauty journey with limited funds or to build a collection for travel or gifts. I have a few items that are my favorites for daily use, while other items will never be able to replace my current favorites.
