Meet Amber Flowers

Journey into Photography

My story begins as a child with a Kodak 110 film camera, from which I was inseparable.

In 2004, two years after high school graduation, I purchased my first digital camera, using my first paycheck from my first ‘real’ job as a teenager. More than a decade later, I still keep a camera with me everywhere I go. Even when I don’t think I’ll need it, I usually find something worth photographing.

Throughout my existence, I have had a passion for all things nature and my fine art work captures that inspiration. There is something deeply alluring about the feel of the sun on my skin, the wind in my hair and the freedom to explore. To hold a camera in my hand and to capture every moment. The permanence of photography has forever intrigued me. The ability to capture an image and develop it into something beautiful for future generations. A camera is a magical device, providing a way to capture a moment in time, tell a story and inspire others to see the beauty I see in the ordinary.

I am most happy lost in a quiet forest, regardless of the season. I spend much of my free time hiking across rugged terrain or swimming under the stars. I’m a bit hyper and eccentric, but you’ll find that makes my work authentic and full of creative expression. Being self-taught, find it limits my creative flow to restrict myself to one genre, so I enjoy the flexibility of variety. Though it can be a creative challenge, I am inspired to continually strive towards visual perfection. Of course, this desire results in often being far too hard on myself. Yet, like most artists, I must balance the need to create what satisfies my soul with what will interest the viewer.

Evolution into Design

When one of my digital manipulations was chosen as a cd cover for a rock band in another state, it felt natural to evolve from still images to learning graphic design. I began playing around with fonts and creating designs for website banners. As for web design, I started that back in the days when the internet had that strange dial-up sound. My first website was on the Yahoo Geocities platform. These were the days of Myspace, Livejournal, Yahoo Groups, online forums and chats.. I was often asked to create the code and graphics for profile customization. I learned to use social media from when it first began, including Facebook, Twitter (now known as X), Instagram. TikTok, and others.

Currently, I specialize in the design and development of custom websites on the popular Squarespace and Wordpress platforms, as well as social media management. I combine my skills and expertise to provide a full-service experience through photography, graphic design, copywriting, marketing, public relations and press releases.

Building a Business

What started as a creative hobby at a young age evolved into an unexpected talent I couldn’t ignore. I studied and practiced endlessly, wanting to absorb as much knowledge as I could. I regularly donated my work before finally listening to the encouragement to start a small business. Since 2014, I’ve worked as Soul Gaze Photography where I am now a traveling photographer and web designer providing photographic art for souls of all ages and websites and social media marketing for creatives, small businesses and non-profits.

In 2017, Soul Gaze Photography, LLC was accepted as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador™. So much of nature inspires me, yet something about lightning and storms fascinates me deep within my soul. I greatly feared severe weather as child, but with age discovered I could use knowledge to calm my storm. I have volunteered with CoCoRAHS since 2009 and served as a trained SKYWARN spotter for the National Weather Service office in Louisville since 2013. I have also obtained certification in Basic Search and Rescue and Swiftwater Awareness through Kentucky Emergency Management and am CPR/AED/First Aid certified.

A Dedication to Bats and a Dream

In 2018, I began volunteering at Mammoth Cave National Park and the following year, I began a paid internship through the Student Conservation Association as a Summer and Winter Bat Monitor. I provided over 300 volunteer hours and over 2400 internship hours. It was some of the most rewarding work of my life!

I’ve always loved bats and being a local to Mammoth Cave, I fell in love with the Park at a young age. I’d started applying to work at Mammoth Cave in 2015, continually adding to my resume and tweaking it to adapt to extensive unique federal resume standards.

Then finally, in Summer 2021, I was hired for a seasonal federal position (May through October) as a Visitor Use Assistant for Fees in the Visitor Center. It had been a dream of mine to wear the uniform and be a park ranger. To finally make it after all the work to get there was amazing. I was so grateful!

I was selected to serve again for the 2022 summer season, but had to temporarily step back to take care of my newest daughter. She was born early due to preeclampsia and the nationwide formula shortage at the time meant I had no backup for my low milk supply. I persisted with breastfeeding and now we’ve made it over a year! It’s been quite the journey.

I deeply miss being at the park daily and am looking forward to returning once able.

Personal Instagram

When not busy at work, I’m busy at home as a mother of two teens (Lorna & Tristan) and a planetary newbie (Aurora) two cats and a dog in Glasgow, Kentucky. We work in the garden, sit around a fire debating science and philosophy while gazing at the stars or cooking dinner together. We’re often going on a new adventure hiking, caving, exploring creeks for rocks and fossils or swimming past sunset under a starry night sky.

We love roadtrips, whether it’s just to the nearest lake or a multi-day drive. Our farthest distance from home so far is west to Albuquerque, New Mexico and south to Pensacola Florida. We have a goal to visit every State and National Park or moving around, following our careers wherever they take us. Chaz encourages us to expand our horizons and see the beauty in life.

We met at Mammoth Cave National Park at his dad’s retirement party and quickly became best friends. I was a volunteer, providing photography to the park and assisting in various projects as needed. He was a volunteer and a bat monitor intern. Eventually, we were partners as bat monitor interns for several years. Now we’re partners in life as well.

We recently had a baby bat in April 2022. Delivery didn’t quite go as planned, (preeclampsia sucks!) but I’m so grateful we’re both still here to have new adventures. I had to give up my seasonal job at Mammoth Cave due to the unprecedented nationwide formula shortage and a low breastmilk supply. I worked so hard to get that uniform, but her life was more important than mine. I didn’t give up the five years I applied. I will try again, when the time is right.
